Early last month we blogged about the The Magic Castle Hotel up in Hollywood but recently I got the chance to get inside. The hotel is just part of the larger Magic Castle, which is the private clubhouse for members of the Academy of Magical Arts. It's an actual castle (the only one in Los Angeles), built into the hills two or three blocks north of Hollywood Blvd. You can get in either by making dinner reservations or by knowing a member and tagging along with them. The inside is a series of winding staircases and hallways, leading to showrooms that have names like the Parlour of Prestidigitation and the Palace of Mystery. The Castle uses those rooms for the regularly scheduled shows that they put on for guests throughout the night. But since the Castle is also an actual clubhouse where members of the Academy come to hang out, you're as likely to bump into a random magician just practicing some tricks. Such impromptu shows end up happening all over the place, in any of the small rooms built into the hallways. Dress is formal and your bar tab will be non-trivial, but in exchange you get a night of guaranteed entertainment. added on 2007-08-26
